If you drop off your book request form and information before tomorrow at noon, we should have it processed by Wednesday the 1st.

WIA students: that means you should be able to pick up your voucher on the 1st. Give us a call before stopping by if you want.

Energy Savings & Rebates Homeowner Workshop

Energy Upgrade California provides California property owners with rebates and incentives for home improvement projects that increase energy efficiency, conserve resources, create a more comfortable home and potentially lowers utility bills.

With help from the City of Capitola they are hosting a homeowner workshop on January 30. The workshop informs homeowners on how to get $1,000 to $4,000+ in rebates for energy efficiency single-family home upgrades.

The bookstore will begin selling books on January 23rd to Fast Track students using our vouchers. You may come to our office starting next Tuesday, January 17th, to begin the voucher process. You may use the computers in our office to print needed items.

We will verify you are registered for classes on your ed plan, are only requesting required books for the classes you are enrolled in and that you are on the list at the bookstore. You may pick up your approved voucher on January 23 and take it to the bookstore to purchase your books. You must bring your cash register receipt to our office ASAP.

Cabrillo's Aptos campus lost power yesterday afternoon due to the high winds. The emergency notification system was activated to inform students that evening classes were cancelled. Cabrillo College is now offering an SMS-based emergency notification service for your mobile phone. In the event of an emergency, Cabrillo students, staff, faculty and others will be alerted in real-time important security information. Click here for more information and to sign up.

Santa Cruz County: If there is a wildfire near your home and the fire department needs to evacuate people, they will do a reverse 911 call to all homes in the area to inform them when and how evacuation will happen. Log into WebAdvisor to look up your classes.
Click on "Students Click Here"
Under "Registration", click on "Register for Sections"

If you do not know the class section number, click on "Search and Register"
choose Fall 2011 for "Term", then look up your classes. You do not need to fill in all the fields.

the classes will be added to your Preferred Sections which is like a shopping cart

If you do know the class section number, click on "Express Register"
Enter the section numbers for all your classes and click "Submit"

CARE and FERA Programs provide a monthly discount on energy bills for income qualified households and housing facilities.

Energy Partners provides income-qualified customers FREE energy education, weatherization measures and energy-efficient appliances to reduce gas and electric usage. Even if you rent your home you can get help with this program, with your landlord's approval. They will benefit too with improvements made to their house.

REACH is a one-time energy-assistance program for those who have experienced an uncontrollable or unforeseen hardship. You may receive an energy credit up to $200.

Third-Party Notification can help if you care for a relative, friend or client who could overlook paying his or her PG&E bill because of illness, financial hardship, language difficulties, or other issues. PG&E will notify you or any other person designated as a third party when the person you're concerned about ever receives a late notice due to an unpaid PG&E bill.

Short-Term, No Interest Emergency Loans

Furniture for Families

Court Appointed Special Advocates - CASA - serves children in the Santa Cruz County foster care system due to abuse or neglect in their family homes. With time and support, many parents can be safely reunited with their children. These families often need furniture and household items to create a functional home. Furniture for Families collects donated furniture and household items to help reuniting families.

California has implemented a number of programs under the Hardest Hit Fund. These programs, entitled Keep Your Home California, are federally-funded foreclosure prevention programs targeted at low and moderate income homeowners who have suffered a financial hardship, experienced a change in household circumstance, or are subject to a recent or upcoming increase in their monthly mortgage payment and are at risk of default on their home loan. Keep Your Home California programs include an Unemployment Mortgage Assistance Program, Mortgage Reinstatement Assistance Program, Principal Reduction Program, and Transition Assistance Program.
Benefits of the Keep Your Home California programs include the following:

Up to $3,000 in monthly mortgage assistance for qualified unemployed homeowners for up to six months.
Up to $15,000 for eligible homeowners to help reinstate past due first mortgage loans.
Up to $50,000 on a dollar-for-dollar matching basis with participating lenders to reduce outstanding principal balances of qualifying borrowers with negative equity.
Up to $5,000 in transition assistance for eligible homeowners to move into more affordable places of residence.

Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Essay Contest!

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay-Scholarship Contest began in 2004, sponsored by George Ow, Jr. in honor of the commemoration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. sculpture by Barrington McLean. Dr. King espoused social justice, nonviolence, and human rights. He dreamed of an equitable society wherein all people are treated with dignity and respect. His philosophy (that individuals should not be judged by the color of their skin, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, or class, but instead be judged by the content of their character) is still relevant today.

All students are encouraged to apply for this scholarship.
Scholarship Amounts to be Awarded:
- Students with the top scoring essays will be awarded a scholarship between $100 and $500 for the MLK Jr. Scholarship.

Temporary Work Available through Tsunami National Emergency Grant

Help the Harbor and Community Recover from the Tsunami!

The Workforce Investment Board (WIB) of Santa Cruz County has received a National Emergency Grant (NEG) to hire 57 workers to help repair tsunami damage. The NEG project will be administered by WIB with program operators Central Coast Energy Services (CCES) and the Community Action Board (CAB) of Santa Cruz County.

Congested Parking

During the first few weeks of the semester, parking will be very difficult. Many extra people will be trying to add classes, and therefore will be trying to park. Plan accordingly and arrive at school early so you can get to your class or appointment on time.

The first week of school you may park in a student parking lot without a parking permit. However, if you park in a staff lot without any parking permit, you WILL get a ticket.

Starting the second week of school, regular parking rules apply.

You may pickup parking permits at the Student Affairs office in Aptos or at the Watsonville Center.

Fall Parking Permits

You may be pick up your parking permit beginning August 15th at the Student Affairs office on the Aptos Campus, and the Admissions & Records office on the Watsonville Campus.

If you have not already done so, please add your parking permit to your registration as soon as possible. In the future, make your selection during your registration process in WebAdvisor. This helps streamline our process for paying your tuition and fees.

Remember, bus passes will not be available through Cabrillo for the Fall semester. If you need a bus pass, you must purchase it from the Santa Cruz Metro.

Books for Fall Classes

WIA Students
You must come to the office to fill out the 3-part WIA book request form. Please bring the following items with you: a copy of your current education plan showing Fall 2011, class schedule printout from WebAdvisor and class books printout from the bookstore website. You may use the computers in our office to print these items.

We will verify you are registered for classes on your ed plan, are only requesting required books for the classes you are enrolled in and that you are on the list at the bookstore. You may pick up your approved voucher on August 15th and take it to the bookstore to purchase your books. Remember to return your cash register receipt back to our office ASAP.

CalWORKs Students

New EDD VISA Debit Card

Beginning in July, 2011, rather than mailing paper checks, the EDD will mail claimants an electronic benefit payment, Visa-branded EDD Debit Card from Bank of America.

The EDD Debit Card^SM allows customers to receive their benefits faster, easier, and more secure. It also provides customers with a direct deposit transfer option once they have received their card.

Customers receiving UI benefits will continue to receive printed checks until they are automatically identified to be switched over to the new debit card service. Due to system limitations, we can not inform individuals ahead of time when the switch will occur for them.

Customers will receive the following separately:

An Electronic Benefit Payment Notification letter when they are being switched over to the card.
A claim form without a check attached.
The card itself within approximately three to five business days of receiving the notification letter.
